Broken Ankle at Woolworth Boulder,

Scafell Pike 28th May 2005

5/17:30/5/05 (2.46 pm) - Monday
The police called the team out to respond to a broken ankle on Scafell Pike.  A father and his 12 year old son were descending from Mickledore when the son went over on his ankle at the Woolworth boulder and could not put any weight on it.  The father called the police on his mobile phone.  The Team Leader was already descending the Pike and strangely enough was actually passing the father when he was calling the police.  He was unaware of the pending call until 5 minutes later when his own mobile went off.  He quickly made his way back up and stabilized the casualty while the rest of the team made their way up.   The boy's leg was put in an inflatable splint and he was stretchered back down to Brackenclose.  The father drove his son to Whitehaven Hospital for treatment.  There were around 15 team members on the rescue and the incident closed at around 7.00 pm.

Julian Carradice, first on scene which could have been the fastest yet response to a '999' police request by a mountain rescue team, if Julian had realised that the man on the mobile phone stood by his son was actually talking to the police and asking for mountain rescue.  Location of the incident was just below Woolworth boulder on the path down from Mickledore.  Wastwater can just be seen in the background below Yewbarrow.

First to arrive from the advance group was Tim with half (the heavy half) the Bell stretcher.  Mountain rescue first aid sack is with John, hard on his heels

As soon as the second half of the stretcher arrives, Tim and Pete start putting it together for the carry / sledging down.

Injured left ankle has been immobilized within the inflatable splint.  Note that Julian had already carried out first aid and strapped it in a Sam splint.  Although a hot sunny day it soon cools down when you are out of the sun and sitting still, hence the one man bivvy tent that the father was already carrying as emergency kit.

The young casualty is now securely strapped into the stretcher, warm inside the thermally insulated casualty bag.

Just a breather before the descent down the steep grassy slopes below Black Crag and Green How

Back rope belay to provide a safety back up during the sledging operation to get down to the stream crossing at the bottom of Brown Tongue

Safely down and back at the Brackenclose road head.

Looking back up onto Scafell Pike - a pleasant late spring day but still a place where accidents can happen to the best of us.  These two walkers were well prepared, well equipped in strong boots with good ankle support but still vulnerable to bad luck.  Lets hope it hasn't dampened the spirits of our young man from Stockport and he will be back again when his ankle has repaired itself.

Safe walking
