Madeira Holiday - Arco da Calheta

10th to 17th May 2004 - Richard & Carole

 Day 1 walk - 11th May    
       
    Day 1 walk at 25 das  Fontes.  Cold and wet to start. Carole wore her hat and gloves. cleared up later in the afternoon   Carole at 25 das Fontes Levada walk on Day 1 - first walk of the holidays 
       
   Had lunch by the pool where the 25 founteines drop in.
       
  Water stop on the way back      This is the 800m long tunnel which carries the levada from the north side of the island through to the south side - we only went in 100 metres
       
  Day 2 - 12th May - Sao Lourenco Peninsula
       
       
      A yellow oasis amongst the volcanic terrain 
       
       Plenty of pretty colourful flowers along the way
       
       
 Day 3 - 13th May - Porto Moniz and round the island trip

 Day 4 - 14th May - Lavada do Carral  
       
       
  The entrance to the tunnel.  In the background is the overhanging rock where the lavada has been cut into the mountainside.  Here it collects water from a falling waterfall - yes we got wet    The most dangerous lavada on the island. Overgrown with steep drops - point on lavada where we turned back is just to the left of Carole's head
       
       
       
       
 Day 5 - 15th May - Pico do Arieiro onto Pico Ruivo  
       
       
       
       
Pica Riva refuge hut at around 1,800m, just 100m from the summit but a minimum 1 hour walk to civilisation

Day 6 - 16th May - Levada do Norte (the tightrope walk)
Totally unprotected and reserved for Lavada professionals
       
   The Levada Norte 800m long tunnel - lights were essential - you can see the spot of light at the end of the tunnel 
       
   As far as you can go on Levada Norte - 'only for tightrope walkers - 200 m drop just to the left of Carole Levada Norte - looking up the valley
